Within those groups the major manufacturers hold several hundred shades between them, and nearly any of them will go on nearly any car. What separates one color from another is not the swatch. It is how that film behaves on a curved panel, how it ages in your climate, and whether you can still buy it in three years when one door needs replacing.

What Car Wrap Colors Can You Actually Get?

From a professional film library you are choosing inside roughly nine families: black, white, grey, blue, green, red, yellow or orange, brown or bronze, and the specialty effects. Each family exists in gloss, satin and matte, and most also exist in a metallic version with aluminium flake in the pigment layer. That flake is what makes a color look like paint rather than like a sticker. A flat non-metallic grey reads as primer in direct sun; the same grey with flake in it reads as a factory finish.

The honest limit is that a wrap cannot do everything paint does. Candy and pearl effects that depend on layered translucent coats have no real equivalent in cast film, and a true liquid metal look does not exist in a roll. Everything else is available, and in a wider range than any manufacturer offers from the factory.

Which Colors Hold Up Best in Sun and Winter?

Finish matters more than hue. Gloss is the most forgiving over time: the topcoat sheds dirt, takes a polish, and hides light swirls. Satin sits in the middle. Matte is the least forgiving, because there is no gloss layer to clean, so anything that soaks in stays visible, and a matte panel cannot be polished back. On a Tesla Model S Plaid we wrapped in Westlake Village in 3M Wrap Film Series 2080, color M211 Matte Charcoal Metallic, the owner was told at handover that fuel splash and bird lime come off within the hour or not at all. That is the trade for a finish nobody else on the road has.

Hue matters at the extremes. Strong reds and bright yellows carry the least pigment stability under ultraviolet light, so a south-facing roof in California ages faster than the same panel on a car kept in a garage near Weelde. Blacks and greys are the most stable. None of this is a reason to avoid a color; it is a reason to know which panels will show it first, which is almost always the roof, the hood and the top of the mirrors. Our guide to matte finishes goes deeper on what that costs in upkeep.

What Color Should I Wrap My Car?

Start from the body, not from the swatch book. A panel with deep recesses and sharp creases will stretch film at every corner, and a metallic shifts tone slightly where it is stretched hardest. On the Huracan we built in Turnhout that was handled by designing to it rather than fighting it: 3M 2080 HG15 High Gloss Bright Yellow against satin black, with the split placed where the body already had a line. Robbert drew it that way on purpose.

Flat-sided cars give more freedom, and are where the quieter colors pay off. Before anyone commits, we put the actual car on screen in the actual color, using the Instant Color Changer we work with in consultations. Click it before you stick it: it is far cheaper to reject a green on a photograph than on a finished hood.

Do Some Colors Cost More to Install?

Yes, and the difference is hours rather than film. A full color change on a normal car sits in a broad range in the US market, and matte, satin and specialty films sit at the upper end of it because they allow no correction. A gloss panel with a small flaw can often be reheated and reworked. A matte panel cannot: the installer starts again with new film. Chrome and brushed effects are harder still, which is why some shops decline them. Our breakdown of what a car wrap really costs sets out the ranges per scope. If the color is also meant to protect the paint underneath, gekleurde lakbeschermingsfolie is the other route, at a different thickness and a different price.

Veelgestelde vragen

Do car wrap colors fade?

Cast films from the major manufacturers hold their color for years on vertical panels. Horizontal surfaces go first, because they take the most direct ultraviolet light. Bright reds and yellows show it earliest, blacks and greys latest.

Can a wrap color be matched to the factory paint?

Close, not exact. No film corresponds to a paint code. For a repair on a car that is already wrapped, we keep the film details on file so the same product can be ordered rather than guessed at.

Which car wrap colors are hardest to install?

Matte and satin first, because every mistake stays visible, then chrome and brushed metal, which have almost no stretch before they mark. A deep gloss black is unforgiving for a different reason: it mirrors the room, so any dust under the film shows.

What happens if my color is discontinued?

It happens more often than people expect. The Avery SW900 Satin Hope Green we put on a Range Rover Velar is no longer in production. A full wrap is unaffected, but a single damaged panel years later may mean reconsidering the whole car, which is worth knowing before choosing something rare.

Can I change my mind after the film is on?

Yes. A color change in cast film is reversible by design, and on sound factory paint it comes off again without taking the paint with it. That is the real argument for wrapping rather than painting a color you are not certain about.

If you want a color on your own car rather than on a swatch, our studios in California and Belgium will put it on screen first and quote the work from there.
