Honest Numbers, Panel by Panel

How long does PPF last? On a car that is washed sensibly and not parked under a tree, five to ten years is the honest working range for a quality cast urethane film. But that number is an average of panels that age at very different speeds. The doors and rear quarters usually outlive it. The hood edge, the front bumper and the mirror backs often reach the end years earlier, because they are the panels taking the stone impacts the film exists to absorb.

How Long Does PPF Last on a Car, Panel by Panel?

Paint protection film is a clear thermoplastic urethane layer, roughly 150 to 200 microns thick, with a self-healing topcoat that closes light swirls with heat. It is between six and ten times thicker than a vinyl color change film, which is why it stops a stone rather than tearing with it.

In practice we see doors, roofs and rear quarters still sound after eight to ten years. We see front bumpers and hood leading edges pitted and starting to lift at five to seven, sometimes earlier on a car that commutes on a gravel-shouldered road. Headlight film is its own case: it is a small piece in a hot location and it is the one we replace most often. None of that is a failure of the film. It is the film doing the job, and the correct response is to replace the front sections rather than the car.

What Actually Ends a Film’s Life?

Four things, in order of how often we see them. Edge lift, where the film was not wrapped far enough around a panel edge and dirt works into the gap. Yellowing of the topcoat, which happens on older or cheaper film and shows first on a white car. Impact damage dense enough that the self-healing layer can no longer close it, so the surface stays matte and grey. And staining from something left on the surface: tree sap, brake dust baked on in summer, a bird deposit that sat for a week.

The one that is avoidable is the first. Edge lift is an installation outcome, not a material one, and it is why removal and refitting of badges, lights and trim matters more than the brand on the roll. On the full-body verfbeschermingsfolie we applied to a Bentley Continental GTC in Turnhout for a client from Antwerp, in Inozetek glossy PPF, the time went into exactly that: getting the film behind the edges so there is nothing for dirt to find.

Does California Sun Shorten It Compared With Belgian Winters?

Both climates shorten film life, differently. In Westlake Village the enemy is ultraviolet light and heat: a dark car parked outside all summer puts the topcoat under constant load, and that is where yellowing begins. Near Weelde the enemy is winter road salt and grit, which attacks the edges and sandblasts the lower front. A Californian car tends to fail from the top down; a Belgian car from the bottom up. A garage, or even a carport, is worth more to the film than any product you can put on top of it.

How Long Does Colored PPF Last?

Colored film behaves like clear film for structure and like a wrap for appearance, so it inherits the lifespan of the urethane and the fading behavior of the pigment. Expect the protective function to outlast the color. Our comparison of colored PPF against a vinyl wrap sets out what changes in thickness, cost and removal, and what paint protection film costs panel by panel explains why the quote is driven by hours rather than by film.

Veelgestelde vragen

Does PPF yellow over time?

Modern cast film with a good topcoat holds clear for years. Yellowing is mostly a symptom of cheap film, of an old generation of film, or of heavy ultraviolet exposure without washing. It shows soonest where the film sits over white or light silver paint.

How long does PPF last on headlights?

Less than on body panels. A headlight is small, hot and directly in the path of everything the road throws up, so it is the first section we expect to replace. Replacing that one piece is a short job and far cheaper than a lens.

Should the whole car be refilmed at once?

Rarely. Sectional replacement is normal and sensible: a new bumper and hood edge on a car whose doors are still sound. The reason to do a full car is cosmetic consistency, not protection.

Does a ceramic coating make film last longer?

It makes it easier to keep clean, which indirectly helps, but it adds no impact resistance. The two layers do different jobs, and the order matters. Our piece on PPF against ceramic coating goes through what each one actually stops.

What does removal after eight years look like?

On a car with sound factory paint, controlled heat and patience take the film off and leave the paint underneath in the condition it was in on the day the film went on, which is usually visibly better than the panels that were left bare. Adhesive residue is normal and comes off with a dedicated remover. The same principle applies to a color change wrap, which we cover in when to change a vehicle wrap.

If you want to know what is left in the film already on your car, we will look at it and tell you which sections are worth replacing and which are fine.
