Paint Protection Film Cost: What You Pay For, Panel by Panel

Paint protection film cost in the US market runs from roughly 800 to 2,500 dollars for a front end, and from about 5,000 to 9,000 dollars for a full body on a normal car. The film is the smaller half of that number. What you are paying for is hours: how many panels are covered, how much of the car comes off first, and how unforgiving the shapes are.

Those are orientation ranges, not a price list. A quote only becomes real once someone has seen the car, because two cars of the same size can be a day apart in work.

What does paint protection film cost per panel?

Priced per area, a job breaks down roughly like this on a mainstream sedan or SUV:

  • Partial front (bumper, the leading 18 to 24 inches of the hood, mirrors, headlights): about 800 to 1,400 dollars.
  • Full front (full hood, full fenders, bumper, mirrors, headlights): about 1,600 to 2,800 dollars.
  • Wear points (door cups, door edges, rocker panels, the loading lip of the trunk): about 200 to 600 dollars as a set.
  • Full body: about 5,000 to 9,000 dollars, and higher on a supercar with vents, splitters and carbon work.

The jump from partial to full front is not about surface area. A full hood on most cars has to be covered in one piece, and one piece of 8 mil film over a double curve is a different skill than a strip along the leading edge.

Why is paint protection film so expensive?

Three reasons, and none of them is the roll.

The material behaves differently from vinyl. A quality urethane protection film is roughly twice the thickness of a cast color change film, so it resists a stretch where vinyl would give. That resistance is exactly what stops a stone, and it is also what makes the corners slow.

Then there is disassembly. On a job done properly, badges, lights, handles, mirror caps and trim come off so the film can be wrapped around the edge instead of cut along it. That is where the difference between a 1,200 dollar front end and a 2,600 dollar front end usually sits. If a quote is notably cheap, ask what comes off the car. A film that stops at a blade cut next to the headlight will show that line in two years.

Finally, the paint underneath has to be right first. Film magnifies whatever it seals in, so a light correction pass is normal before the first panel is covered.

Does colored PPF cost more than clear film?

Yes. On the same car, colored film typically lands 20 to 40 percent above clear, because you are buying a color change and the protection in a single layer. A Bentley Continental GTC came to our Turnhout studio for exactly that: the full body in Inozetek glossy paint protection film, for a client from Antwerp, with the color and the protection arriving together and still removable later. The trade-offs against a vinyl color change are set out in our comparison of colored PPF and a vinyl wrap.

At the other end of the same idea, a McLaren 720S left our Westlake Village studio in matte paint protection film with orange contour graphics. One layer, two jobs, and a number that looks high next to a wrap until you price a repaint of a carbon nose.

What should a quote include?

A complete quote names the film brand and product line, the exact panels, what is removed and refitted, whether a correction pass is included, and what happens if a panel has to be redone. Ours also names the warranty: 2wrap.com covers one full year on the installation and on the color as our own promise, alongside the film manufacturer’s material warranty. Deliberate damage and film that someone else has worked on or picked at are excluded. Adhesion shows itself early, so film that has stayed put for two months does not start releasing on its own later.

Veelgestelde vragen

How much does paint protection film cost to remove?

Budget roughly 400 to 1,200 dollars for a full body, depending on age and sun exposure. Quality film comes off in sheets with heat. Cheap film that has baked for years comes off in pieces, and that is billed by the hour.

Is paint protection film worth the cost?

On a car you intend to keep or resell, a front end is usually the easiest money in the business: the panels that take the stones are the panels that cost the most to repaint. On a lease you are handing back in two years, a partial front is often enough.

Does paint protection film cost more than a vinyl wrap?

Clear film on the front end costs less than a full color change. Full body film costs more, usually around 1.5 to 2 times a comparable wrap. They are not the same purchase: one protects the paint you have, the other changes the car’s color.

Does a bigger car cost more?

Size matters less than shape. A large, flat SUV panel can go faster than a small, deeply curved supercar fender. Vents, spoilers and body kits add hours no matter the footprint.
