Waarom je wel twee keer moet nadenken voordat je Plasti Dip op je hele auto aanbrengt

Plasti dip vs wrap, on a complete car, is not really a close comparison: a sprayed liquid coating is only removable if it is laid on thick enough to peel, and almost nobody does that on a whole vehicle. A vinyl color change is a finished film that lifts off in sheets years later. Here is the car that made the point for us.

Een klantverhaal dat alles zegt

A man asked us to inspect his Mini. He had bought it second-hand, believed it was wrapped, and wanted the wrap taken off. We went over to look, the way we do.

Up close it was obvious the car had never been wrapped. It had been sprayed, not painted, with a liquid coating of the Plasti Dip type. And that is where his problem started.

Plasti Dip vs Wrap: Where Each One Belongs

We are not here to run down a product. Applied properly, with six or more layers, on a small part, a liquid coating does its job: grilles, emblems, badges, a set of calipers. We have seen accents done well with it.

A whole car is a different proposition. Sprayed thin, the coating no longer releases as a sheet. It bonds into the texture of plastic trim and into every panel gap, and it has to be scraped and chemically softened off instead of peeled. On this Mini the previous owner had covered the mirrors, the door handles and all the plastic trims as well. Aggressive chemicals, hours of scraping, and refinishing on some parts: that is the bill now, and the reversibility he was promised is simply not there.

Plasti dip vs wrap: a Range Rover finished in 3M satin dark grey cast vinyl by 2wrap.com

What a Vinyl Color Change Does Instead

Cast film is manufactured to a finish. It arrives with its gloss or matte level already set, it is laid in panels with the edges wrapped behind, and on sound factory paint it comes off again cleanly years later. The paint underneath is protected from stone chips and UV in the meantime, which is the part most owners do not count when they compare the two prices.

It costs more than a spray can, and it is worth the difference for exactly one reason: you can undo it. A full color change on a normal car sits in the range we set out in our guide to what a car wrap costs, and the car wrapping service itself is designed, printed and installed in-house at both our studios. If you want the arithmetic on removal, what removal really leaves behind covers it in detail. The films we use come mainly from 3M and comparable cast ranges.

Veelgestelde vragen

Is Plasti Dip really removable?

Only when it is applied thick enough to peel as a sheet, which means six or more even layers. Below that it tears, and what is left has to be scraped or dissolved. Most of the full-car jobs we are asked to remove were sprayed in two or three layers.

Will removing a liquid coating damage the paint?

The paint usually survives; the plastics often do not. Textured trim, grille mesh and rubber seals hold the coating in their surface, and the solvents needed to shift it are the same solvents that dull them. That is where the refinishing cost appears.

Can you fix a car that was sprayed badly?

Yes, and we do it regularly. We strip what can be stripped, correct and clean the paint, and then wrap it properly if the owner wants the color change back. It takes longer than wrapping a car that was left alone.

Is a liquid coating ever the better choice?

For small accents, a temporary look or a track weekend, it can be. For a complete car you intend to drive daily and sell on, no. The cost of taking it off eventually exceeds what a vinyl wrap would have cost in the first place.
