This Mini Cooper John Cooper Works wears one of motorsport’s most iconic identities: the legendary black-and-gold John Player Special livery. We designed the full Mini John Player Special wrap from the ground up to honour the original JPS racing heritage.
Every element was custom-built for this project. We added the race number 74, printed flag graphics on the doors, gold-wrapped wheels and gold striping running across the entire body – pinstriping everywhere, exactly in the spirit of the original John Player Special concept. The base is a deep gloss black, finished with rich gold detailing for that unmistakable contrast.
The result is a Mini JCW that turns heads from every angle: aggressive, premium and unmistakably motorsport.
About this John Player Special wrap
A John Player Special wrap is one of the most iconic looks in motorsport, and one of our favorite projects to take on. The black-and-gold livery was made famous by the John Player Special Lotus Formula 1 cars of the 1970s and 80s, and recreating it faithfully on a modern car takes far more than two colors – it takes design, proportion and precision.
We treated the whole Mini as a single canvas. The deep gloss black base sets the tone, hand-laid gold striping traces every body line, and the printed graphics – race number 74, the Union Jack door flags and the unmistakable JPS lettering – pull the John Player Special wrap together into one cohesive identity. Nothing was bought off the shelf: the entire design was drawn, scaled and tested specifically for this John Cooper Works.
The build followed our usual process: design approval, full surface prep, then a careful, panel-by-panel install with every seam and edge finished by hand. It is slower than a plain color change, but it is the only way to make a John Player Special wrap look factory-correct.
The finished car reads instantly to anyone who knows their motorsport history, yet still feels modern and premium up close. From the wheels to the roofline, every panel carries the same black-and-gold language – proof that a wrap, done properly, can completely transform a car while honoring a legend.
Want the same treatment? Whether it is a faithful John Player Special wrap or a fully custom design of your own, our team in Belgium and Los Angeles takes every project from first sketch to finished build.
Material choice matters as much as design. We use premium cast wrap films that conform tightly around the Mini’s curves, mirrors and door handles, so the gold lines stay crisp and the black stays deep even over the most complex panels. A quality John Player Special wrap should look painted, not stuck on – and that only happens with the right film and a patient install.
Done properly, a wrap also protects the factory paint underneath and can be removed later without damage, which makes it a smart choice for a special car like this John Cooper Works. With the right care it keeps its finish for years, ready to turn heads at every show, track day and cars-and-coffee meet.
The wheels – gold detailing, true to John Player Special
The wheels are where the John Player Special concept really comes alive. We finished the multi-spoke rims with hand-applied gold detailing on every spoke, carried the gold striping around the rim face and kept the John Cooper Works centre caps for that motorsport signature. It ties the car’s stance into the same black-and-gold language as the body – right down to the spin of the wheel.
The striping – pinstriped with extreme precision
Every gold line on this Mini was laid by hand. From the pinstriping that runs the length of the body to the finest accents, each stripe was applied with extreme precision – no shortcuts, just craftsmanship. It is the detail that makes the John Player Special concept feel authentic, and the reel beside it shows the full build in motion.
